Tiberius Nero died when Tiberius was 9 years old. Tiberius had none of the charm or the authority of his predecessor and he had a poor relationship with the Senate. On Rhodes Tiberius became a recluse—unassuming and amiable at first, resentful and angry later on.

He divorced Vipsania and married Julia. Nero was toppled by an army revolt that sunk into a destructive three-way civil war. Additionally, Tacitus records the capture of the Teutoburg forest and the reclaiming of Roman standards lost years before by Publius Quinctilius Varus when three Roman legions and their auxiliary cohorts had been ambushed by Germanic tribes.
The campaign was a resounding success, but Tiberius could not subjugate the Marcomanni because he was soon summoned to the Rhine frontier to protect Rome's new conquests in Germania.
